CAA baseball tourney preview: UNCW plays ODU on Thursday; Pope earns first team All-CAA

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Junior Thomas Pope earned first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors while teammates juniors Andrew Cain and Matt Campbell and sophomore Hunter Ridge were named second-team all-conference honorees it was announced on Wednesday at the league’s awards banquet.

Pope, who was honored as the first-team’s designated hitter, carries a league-leading .411 batting average into this week’s championship tournament. Pope also paces the conference with an on-base average of .500 and has reached base safely in 25 consecutive games. While Pope, a three-time CAA Player-of-the-Week honoree, has been solid at the plate all season, he also leads the team with 19 stolen bases. He has posted career-highs in 11 offensive categories.

An outfielder for the Seahawks, Cain also posted a career-year with a team-high 10 home runs and is second with 46 runs batted in. He’s been a perfect blend of power and speed with 16 stolen bases to go along with his 26 extra base hits.

Campbell earned his honors at third base after hitting .326 with five home runs and 42 runs scored in 2011. Campbell was named CAA Player-of-the-Week after hitting .625 with against George Mason, including nine hits in a twinbill sweep for the Seahawks. Campbell is perfect on the season in stolen bases, going 9-for-9.

Ridge, who earned third-team and All-Rookie honors as a freshman, rounded out UNCW’s second-team selection. He’s started all 56 games for the Seahawks and is hitting .357 with a career-high 80 hits. In two seasons with UNCW, Ridge has 157 hits to his credit. He leads the Seahawks with 52 runs scored, 54 driven in and has banged out 17 doubles.

The third-seeded Seahawks open their 2011 tournament appearance on Thursday with a 7 p.m. start against second-seeded Old Dominion.
