CAA domination for UNCW men’s swim team comes to an end on Saturday night

RICHMOND, VA (UNCW) — Strong swims from Valtteri Halonen and the UNCW 400 Freestyle Relay of Drew Gartner, Adam Salzman, William Swiss and Alex Labonge earned them All-Colonial Athletic Association honors on Saturday at the CAA Championship at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center.

The Seahawk men, who finished third, saw their 13-year run as conference champions come to an end as William & Mary captured its first CAA title in the sport. UNCW’s women’s team finished sixth as Towson earned its third consecutive conference title.

Halonen, one of UNCW’s most decorated swimmers, finished third in the 200 Backstroke with an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:45.65.

The 400 Free Relay, meanwhile, combined to finish second, UNCW’s top finish of the finals session on Saturday, with a time of 2:58.77.

Posting top-8 finishes in the 100 Free were Salzman and Gartner, placing fourth and seventh overall.

Hannah Stephenson took fifth for the UNCW women in the 200 Backstroke.
