Calling all anglers! King mackerel tournament returns to Southport Marina
SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Do you think you have what it takes to reel in the largest king mackerel?
The 39th Annual U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament is right around the corner. This year’s tournament will be October 5 – 7 at the Southport Marina. The U.S. Open is one of the largest king mackerel tournaments on the East Coast of the United States.
In 2016, the tournament attracted 464 boats and paid out over $250,000. The Tournament has an all cash guaranteed prize structure that is not based on participation numbers.
The tournament pays 55 places in its primary prize category including $25,000 for the largest king mackerel.
Two notable prizes include the Daily Aggregate Weight Prizes and Junior Angler Awards. Each day a $1,000 Aggregate Prize will be given to the boat that catches the most poundage from combining the weights from two or three fish.
Thursday night catch The Groove Pirates from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. playing rock, blues, country and oldies. Blindside will be taking the stage Saturday night from 4:30 p.m.-7 p.m. with your favorite Rock and Roll covers.
Friday morning from 7 a.m.-9 a.m. the boats will check out of the Cape Fear River, Little River Inlet, Holden Beach Marina, Masonboro Inlet and Snows Cut. The action really picks up between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. when the boats line up to weigh in at Southport Marina before the scales close. Saturday’s fishing is over at 4:00pm with the awards ceremony at 7:00pm.
