Candlelight vigil helps Carolina Beach heal

CAROLINA BEACH (WWAY) — Carolina Beach Lake Park was filled with members of the island community. They opened their hearts to those affected by the fires earlier this month.

But tonight was not about mourning, instead the community joined hands and hearts to celebrate the lives of Darlene Laslar and Mary Cochran.

Event organizer Shannon Mackay says the idea came to her, while playing the harp, to give back to the island through music. Tonight singers and dancers took to the stage before a candlelight vigil for those who lost their lives two weeks ago. Although the mood was somber when the candles were lit, there was also a feeling of hope and joy for the future.

Carolina Beach is over three quarters of the way to completing their goal of raising $100,000 for victims of the fire who lost homes, property, and most importantly loved ones.
