Cape Fear Chapters: Wilbur Jones discusses his latest WWII history book
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — He’s a local author, World War II military historian, and a retired Navy Captain.
Wilbur D. Jones, Jr. joined WWAY’s Jeff Rivenbark to discuss his 21st book called “Don’tcha know there’s a war on?”
Jones said he’s been working on the book for about three years.
“It’s actually a legacy book, a tribute to Wilmington having been designated as America’s first World War II Heritage City,” Jones explained.
Jones was instrumental in getting Wilmington its dedication as a World War II Heritage City. His efforts began in 2007 and paid off in 2020, when President Donald Trump visited the Battleship North Carolina and announced the dedication.
“I was born and raised in Wilmington and grew up during WWII,” Jones said. “I’m part of the Silent Generation, and the passion I’ve always had for military history and preserving it. I’m a career naval officer, 41 years in the Department of Defense so I felt perfectly at ease in writing not only articles but these books and lectures. It’s been a professional pleasure.”
Key highlights of “Don’tcha know there’s a war on?” include:

- A close look at Wilmington’s shipyard, defense industries, and German POW camps
- Profiles of Wilmington’s two Medal of Honor recipients and other combat heroes in the Battle of Midway, D-Day, and Battle of the Bulge
- The story of Germany’s only attack on America—the U-boat firing on Kure Beach
- An examination of the crucial roles of women and Black citizens in the war effort, and how workforce entry reshaped American society
Jones will celebrate the release of his new book with two book signing events at the Hannah Block Historic USO/Community Arts Center on Tuesday, September 8 and Wednesday, September 9 from 4 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
His books can be purchased through major booksellers, independent bookstores, and his website.
