Cape Fear Community College offering new programs

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Classes will soon resume at Cape Fear Community College and there are a number of new programs being offered this fall. Classes officially begin Friday, August 17.

Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary field of engineering that teaches students about a number of things including how to work on robotics and conveyors.

“With the aging workforce, we have a lot of retiring folks, this is an opportunity for folks to get a good two-year education with low or no college debt,” said Mark Council, CFCC Dean of Career and Technical Education.

A two-year education at CFCC will cost approximately less than $11,000.

Another new area of study at CFCC is the lineman program which provides students with the fundamental skills necessary to work in the utility industry.

“CFCC offers a 10-week boot camp designed to prepare men and women in entry-level jobs in the utility industry and they will then go to the utility company that hires them in an apprenticeship program,” said John Dowling, CFCC Dean of Continuing Education.

If you’re in a dead-end job or one in which you’re not passionate about, Council suggests exploring the wide range of opportunities available at CFCC.

“We’ve got counselors, advisors and they could call John and I and we could talk with them about what jobs have momentum in this area,” Council said.

CFCC will host a one-stop enrollment event on Saturday, August 11, from 8 AM – 12 PM at its campus in downtown Wilmington. Students will be able to get assistance with admissions, financial aid, registration and more.

If you’re unable to start classes on August 17, mini sessions begin September 17 and October 17.

If you want to pursue a four-year degree at a university, you may want to consider taking your basic or core classes at CFCC and transfer to another institution.

“Before you go to a four-year university, you can come and get those two years out of the way and you can save a ton of money coming to Cape Fear Community College,” Council said.
