Cape Fear Museum has virtual event, celebrating Juneteenth

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Museum in Downtown Wilmington celebrated Juneteenth on Friday.

A storyteller read the book Juneteenth for Mazie by Floyd Cooper which talked about the meaning of the day.

A museum spokesperson said they do not always celebrate Juneteenth since it does not always fall on a weekday.

The spokesperson said this year, they hope to inspire students to continue learning about the historically significant day.

“It’s not as obviously widely talked about as a holiday as other days in history, and so for a lot of people, it’s an education for them to learn what this day means to so many people in our country and why it is something that we all need to know a little bit more about.”

The spokesperson said they normally educate students about Juneteenth on their 1898 field trips.
