Cape Fear River plane crash under investigation
LILLINGTON, NC (AP) — Federal investigators are looking into
what caused a small plane to crash into the Cape Fear River in
Harnett County.
Officials have not identified the two people in the
single-engine Cessna, which was discovered Thursday afternoon in
the river east of Lillington near Harnett Regional Jetport.
Officials say at least one person on the plane died. No names
have been released.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board were
heading to the scene Friday morning.
Federal Aviation Administration officials say the plane left
Philadelphia, Miss., on Wednesday evening heading to Harnett
County.
Family members alerted the FAA Wednesday night, when the plane
failed to return.
Officials say the plane appears to have crashed on its approach
to the airport.
