Fatal crash on Cape Fear Memorial Bridge

WILMINGTON — A three-vehicle crash on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Wednesday afternoon killed a 29 year-old woman. Police said just before 3 p.m., a flat-bed truck was driving into Wilmington when it tried to change lanes, hitting an 18-wheeler. The flat-bed truck lost control and flipped over the guardrail into oncoming traffic and hit a Chevy Tahoe.

The 29 year-old female passenger in the Tahoe died, and a four-year boy in the Tahoe was airlifted to Chapel Hill. The Tahoe’s driver was treated for injuries and released.

The driver of the flat-bed truck received treatment for his injuries, which do not appear to be life-threatening. According to police, the driver of the 18-wheeler was not hurt and continued on to the Port of Wilmington, which was his intended destination.

The names of thoes involved in the accident are expected to be released Thursday.
