Cape Fear Red Cross looking for volunteers

WILMINGTON — When a disaster like a fire strikes they jump into action. But the American Red Cross says it is in need of volunteers.

Saturday the Cape Fear chapter recruited nearly 20 new volunteers. They attended training sessions, including several courses on mass care and shelter operations.

Representatives say this information is critical when volunteers respond to emergencies like Thursday night’s fire at Canterbury Woods apartments in Wilmington.

American Red Cross volunteer Dru Hoge said, “We can get a team out there and make sure volunteers helps those who have lost their homes, find a safe, secure and sanitary place to sleep tonight, food to eat, clothes to wear and someone to talk to — someone that will help walk them through this recovery process.”

The Red Cross has housed at least two of the families affected by that fire.

If you’d like to help support the American Red Cross volunteers say you can donate blood or make financial contributions by calling 762-2683.
