Carolina Beach boardwalk extension work pushed back
CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Construction for the Carolina Beach Boardwalk extension has been postponed and some business owners say this setback is actually good news.
The Carolina Beach town council voted to rescind the boardwalk extension contract.
Town Manager Michael Cramer said the project was slated to begin this month and go until June. He said that was a concern for business owners and residents in the area because it’s the beginning of tourist season. He said people were worried about the noise of the construction and blocked beach accesses.
“We determined that there was really no good way to make sure that we met the needs of business owners, and the adjacent property owners, and construct the boardwalk before the tourist season,” said Cramer.
Marc Ledford, the general manager of the Cabana, a private condominium building where the extension will go near, said many of his residents look forward to renting out their properties during the tourist season so construction in the area could have been a problem.
“The biggest concern is possibly losing revenue, redirecting guests that may or may not have access to the beach and maybe rerouting them that would be too far away,” said Ledford. “I think it’s a great idea that they wait until fall, just wait until the busy season is over, and then resume and knock it out faster.”
Cramer said they plan on moving forward with construction work in the fall. He said they expect it be done by December.
