Carolina Beach residents fill sandbags ahead of Matthew

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Carolina Beach residents are doing their best to keep their homes and belongings safe this weekend as Hurricane Matthew moves toward our coast.

The Town of Carolina Beach set up giant piles of dirt and bags to fill with it over on Sumter Avenue, and people were definitely taking advantage of it this afternoon.

People were out filling dozens of bags to take home and set up around doors, windows and garages to help keep water from getting inside when the rough weather hits later this weekend.

One woman said this is her first time going through a storm like this on the Carolina coast, so she just wants to be prepared.

“Right now we’re getting bags of dirt to help protect our property and our house from the water probably going to come in, because I heard we’re supposed to get 5-10 inches. So it’s just pretty much to help protect everything,” Zoey Brass said.

She was not alone. People through the afternoon filled up truck and cars with bags of dirt to do just the same.
