Castle Hayne dog boarding facility suddenly shut down

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A popular doggy daycare and boarding facility on Blue Clay Road closed suddenly on Wednesday after the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office shut them down.

Pet owners were given until 5 p.m. to pick up their dogs.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office says Animal Control Services recently cited the Dog Club of Wilmington with violations. The sheriff’s office says the violations were not fixed, so the State of North Carolina did not renew the facility’s license.

The sheriff’s office says the business has been operating without a license.

When deputies arrived, pet owners were notified to go and get their dogs.

Any pets not picked up were taken to New Hanover Animal Control.

The business owner also posted on Facebook, telling customers they needed to make arrangements to transport their pets to either a different boarding facility or their vet.

The owner, Dayana Scholz, was charged with 19 counts of operation of a pet shop, kennel or auction without a license.

Heather McDougall jumped into action when he friend called her from Colorado with an emergency.

“She’s away for two weeks, her daughter’s having a baby, so there’s really no way for her to come home and get the dog,” said McDougall.

“For dog owners, you know a lot of us, that’s our children. And so to scramble to find a safe place to take them, it’s really scary. And especially what if someone can’t get here by 5:00 or they can’t get in touch with them. And the thought of my dog going to animal control even overnight, is not good for the dog,” she said.

We reached out to Scholz via phone but have not been able to reach her yet.

One woman who was picking up her dog said Scholz and others who run the facility are good people.
