Castle Hayne shooting suspect charges upgraded, family reacts
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — According to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office the woman arrested for a shooting in Castle Hayne Monday night will face first degree murder charges.
Deputies said Robert Crampton was shot by his ex-wife Jennifer Crampton in the head. A spokesperson for New Hanover Regional Medical Center spokesperson said Robert died at the hospital Tuesday.
In the 911 call from the incident caller identifies herself as Jennifer Crampton and when asked who shot Robert, she said he did.
“Was it you Jennifer?” the operator asked.
“Yes.” Jennifer responded.
“You said it was,” said the operator.
“Yeah, yeah,” Jennifer replied. “I wasn’t going to let him, hurt my son anymore.”
The whole situation is surprising to Jennifer Crampton’s family members. Robert Watson’s stepfather is Jennifer’s uncle. Watson said he’s known her for a long time and he sees her as a sister. He said this shooting is hard to believe.
“She’s a really happy, like outgoing person, like I mean it just doesn’t seem like her at all, to do this type of thing, unless it was really, really, really, really like provoked,” said Watson. “We would have never thought Jen was even capable of something like that, she’s such a good mom, and she’s just a good person you know.”
Robert Crampton’s neighbors said he lived in the neighborhood for about 6 months and mainly kept to himself.
Jennifer in jail under no bond for first degree murder.
