Veterans Day ceremonies and services

Whether you know it as Armistice Day or Veterans Day, Tuesday is a day devoted to honoring those who have served our country.

November 11th is the anniversary of the end of World War I, in 1918. On it’s 90th anniversary, the Cape Fear region will remember those who have fought in all American wars.

A service at Independence Mall at 10:00 a.m. will include Staff Sergeant Robert Piper from Camp Lejeune, a representative from Carolina Canines for Service, and the founder of Step Up for Soldiers.

A flag burning ceremony, to properly dispose of worn-out American flags, begins at 10:15 a.m. at Legion Post 10 on Pine Grove Drive in Wilmington. That is followed by an 11:00 a.m. Veterans Day service.

At UNCW, a ceremony starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Campus Commons Amphitheater. History professor David Lavere will discuss the day’s history.

Cape Fear Community College is also having a celebration at noon in Tabitha’s courtyard at the downtown campus. Students and teachers who have served in the armed forces and the commanding officer of Wilmington’s Marine Safety unit will speak.

Saint Paul’s Church on 16th and Market Streets in downtown Wilmington will have a massing of the colors ceremony at noon. Come out to hear musical themes dating from civil war through the 20th century.

In Pender County, a ceremony takes place at the Hampstead Village Gazebo, beginning at 11 a.m.
