Ceremony kicks off construction of Battleship walkway
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Dedication ceremony aboard the USS North Carolina kicks off construction of a new walkway.
The half-a-mile long walkway will allow visitors to walk around the outside of the ship’s hull, seeing it in a new perspective. The SECU Foundation is backing the project as a memorial to all veterans. Governor McCrory and SECU Foundation members participated in the event and recognized local veterans.
Captain Terry Bragg said the new walkway will add to visitor’s experience of the ship.
“It will be surrounding the entire ship, so you can be in the marsh, be in the quite side of the river as well as respect and honor and see the Battleship North Carolina,” Bragg said.
The battleship will stay open during construction and they hope to have the project completed in 18 months.
