CFCC names veterans center in honor of student veterans advocate

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College celebrated Veterans Day with a series of activities at their downtown campus. One event featured the unveiling of the newly named Bob Philpott Veterans Center.

Philpott was active in the US Coast Guard for 26 years before serving as CFCC’s veterans affairs coordinator for the past several years.

Now that he is going into retirement, Philpott said he’s honored to have been part of CFCC’s efforts to support veterans.

“I think what we have tried to do is make our commitment to help them in the transition not just to academia, but to civilian life,” Philpott said.

CFCC President Dr. Ted Spring credited Philpott’s dedication to the college’s student veteran population.

“Under Mr. Philpot’s leadership, CFCC was recognized nationally for three consecutive years as a Military Friendly School and is considered a model for schools around the country,” Dr. Spring said.

The Cape Fear Veterans Center first opened in 2011 to provide resources to approximately 10% of the student population who are veterans or have a veteran in their family.
