CFCC to swear in first campus police chief

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In an effort to beef up campus security, Cape Fear Community College is forming an on campus police force.

CFCC has been working on building the force for about two years. Now they’ve finally been certified as an official police department.

They’ll start out hiring about seven officers, eventually staffing 17 for 24-hour security.
Dan Wilcox has been acting as the head of security for the college since 2012. Tomorrow he’ll be sworn in as the first chief.

Wilcox says serving almost 28,000 students per year is no easy task.

“We are a community in and of ourselves here and the college felt they would be able to better provide a safe learning environment for the students by providing our own police department for the students,” Wilcox said.

Wilcox says other than a change in security uniforms the students will not notice any difference.

The new cops are already included in students’ current parking fees.
