CFPUA fined for Barnards Creek sewage spill
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Division of Water Quality has fined the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority for a sewage spill back in January.
On January 24, 1.4 million gallons of sewage spilled from an 18-inch waste water force main along River Road and Barnards Creek and into the New Hanover County Tidal Creek.
The CFPUA says the $8,350.55 fine includes $7,840 as a civil penalty and a $510.55 enforcement fee.
“We have received correspondence regarding the Barnards Creek civil penalty assessment and are in the process of reviewing it,” CFPUA CEO Matt Jordan said in a statement. “We appreciate the opportunity to work with the State and hold paramount our responsibility as environmental stewards.”
