UPDATED: CFPUA responding to another sewer line break on 23rd Street

WILMINGTON, NC (NEWS RELEASE) — CFPUA crews are responding to a sewer main break in the vicinity of 23rd Street and MLK Parkway.

Due to the location of the line, it is necessary to close a portion of 23rd Street near MLK in order for crews to assess the situation and facilitate repairs.

Southbound traffic traveling on 23rd St. [from MLK Pkwy.] towards Market Street will be shifted to one lane.

CFPUA has had to close River Road the past few weeks to repair another sewer line break.

Additional updates will be provided as more information is known and will be posted under the ‘Notifications’ section of our website: www.cfpua.org.

(UPDATE – 3:30 p.m.) — The waste water spill is occurring along a portion of a 30 inch force main that runs parallel to 23rd Street and feeds into Pump Station 10 located north of Screen Gems Studio. The spill has been identified to be occurring at a 10 year-old repair clamp along this segment of sewer force main in the dense vegetated area west of 23rd Street just before Martin Luther King Parkway.

CFPUA crews (vacuum trucks etc.) are staged along 23rd Street; requiring the lane closure that was previously issued. CFPUA crews responded immediately when notified earlier today by a City of Wilmington crew mowing the right of way in the area.

CFPUA crews set in motion to locate, access, mitigate and plan for repair. At this time, the spill volume appears to be minor and CFPUA crews are working very effectively at containing and capturing it; volumes at the nearby North Side Waste Water Plant have shown no reduction in flow to the plant from the pump station that serves this area.

Crews will continue to work in this area to isolate and address the situation throughout the night. Motorists traveling in this area are cautioned to travel safely and be aware of construction activity.
