Champion dogs, rare breeds coming to Wilmington for weekend shows
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — More than 600 dogs representing 128 breeds are expected in Wilmington this weekend as the Hanover Kennel Club holds its annual American Kennel Club-licensed all-breed dog shows at Legion Stadium.
The club’s 130th and 131st annual shows are scheduled for Oct. 10 and 11, with additional events beginning Friday through a partnership with the Mid-Atlantic Hound Association.
Susan Hayes with the Hanover Kennel Club joined WWAY on Wednesday with Callum, her champion golden retriever, who won Best of Breed on both days of last year’s show and is expected to compete again this year.
Hayes said the weekend will include about 200 hounds, including roughly 30 dachshunds. English and American foxhounds are also among the breeds expected.
Another notable entry is the Spinone Italiano. Hayes said about 30 of the Italian hunting dogs are entered this year as part of a national event for the breed.
Dogs begin by competing within their specific breeds. Winners then advance to group competitions before judges select Best in Show. Hayes said nearly 20 judges are coming from around the country for this year’s events.
Spectators can also speak with breeders and club members about the different breeds, training and other aspects of dog ownership.
Organizers ask spectators not to bring pets that are not entered in the competition.
The shows are expected to continue rain or shine.
Callum, who will return to the show ring this weekend, has also earned a therapy dog title since last year. Hayes said she and Callum volunteer at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare’s hospice center in Wilmington.
Admission and parking are free.
