Changing how to buy paper, lab supplies saves NC money

RALEIGH, NC (AP) – Gov. Pat McCrory says North Carolina government is on track to save more than $30 million over three years just because it’s changed how it buys things like office paper and laboratory supplies.

McCrory’s office on Friday highlighted in a news release efforts by his Department of Administration and the agency’s procurement overhaul program.

The governor’s administration says savings are happening because state agency contracts have been consolidated and ordering supplies have been streamlined, leading to more leverage in buying power. Vendors also must meet higher performance levels.

Savings also are coming from purchases of food and maintenance supplies. The changes currently cover Cabinet-level agencies and the community college system but are expected to expand to other government entities.

The consulting company Accenture helped with the procurement overhaul.
