Charges raised to murder against Beaufort man

BEAUFORT, NC (AP) — A Carteret County grand jury has indicted
a man on a second-degree murder charge in a crash that forced
another driver off a high-rise bridge across the Intracoastal
Waterway.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reported Tuesday that 22-year-old
Aaron Wesley McGarva also has been indicted on a charge of felony
hit and run.

The April 3 wreck occurred on the bridge near Morehead City.
Police say McGarva was speeding when he rear-ended a pick-up truck
driven by 63-year-old Henry Knott Jr.

Knott was killed after his truck was forced over the bridge
railing and into the Newport River.

Morehead City police said they found marijuana in McGarva’s
vehicle.

Lesser original charges against McGarva, including felony death
by motor vehicle and marijuana possession, were dismissed in the
indictment.
