Charlotte spending lots on NC, SC water fight
CHARLOTTE — Charlotte officials say they expect to spend $500,000 in the next few months in a water fight between South Carolina and North Carolina.
South Carolina sued North Carolina at the U.S. Supreme Court in 2007 in a battle over the Catawba River. The dispute began after North Carolina regulators allowed Concord and Kannapolis to pipe water from the Catawba into their own river basin.
The Charlotte Observer reported that city attorney Mac McCarley says the city has already spent $833,000.
Charlotte wants to be in the lawsuit because the Catawba is its water supply. Duke Energy wants in because it manages the river under federal license.
The U.S. Supreme Court said Monday that South Carolina can argue that Charlotte and Duke Energy should not participate, saying their involvement would increase expenses.
