UPDATE: Man charged after alleged street race leads to chase, crash

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Brunswick County man is out of jail after being arrested late Saturday following a brief chase that involved two cars investigators say were racing.

BCSO spokeswoman Emily Flax said a call came in Saturday evening from the Cedar Grove area about two cars driving recklessly. According to warrants, a 2014 and 2016 Corvette were racing on Cedar Grove Road. Flax said deputies responded, and there was a short pursuit. One of the cars involved crashed on Stone Chimney Road near Supply. No one was hurt.

Flax said deputies took Victor Nathaniel Hewett, the driver of the 2014 Corvette, into custody, but the passenger ran off. Flax said a deputy with a K9 was looking for the passenger Saturday night. Meanwhile, the second car got away. As of Sunday morning there was no update on the other people involved.

Hewett, 32, of Supply, is charged with fleeing to elude arrest, speeding, reckless driving and prearranged speed competition. According to a warrant, Hewett was driving 100 mph in a 45 mph zone. Flax said Hewett is out of jail on a $10,000 bond.
