Letter: Chemours plans to capture all Genx, Nafion discharge

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Chemours says it will capture the discharge of GenX and Nafion going into the Cape Fear River.

Representative Deb Butler’s office tells us a source informed her the DEQ met Thursday to hear from Chemours officials after the state moved to revoke the company’s wastewater discharge permit.

Before the meeting, the plant manager sent DEQ a letter saying Chemours will “capture for off-site disposal all process wastewater” from the discharge site of the Nafion and GenX chemical byproducts.

“We learned about this six months ago and the pressure that the community brought to bear on this issue is just very impressive,” said Rep. Butler. “And people listened, the company listened, the Department of Environmental Quality listened, the Governor and his staff listened, and I am just pleased as punch to be whatever spokes model I can be for the effort.”

We are still waiting for an official statement from DEQ to confirm they have agreed to those terms.
