RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — Cheryl Burns has been elected Board Chair of Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines, with her term beginning March 7, 2026.

Burns, a longtime leader within the organization, brings extensive experience in youth development and community service to the role. She has previously served on the Executive Committee, chaired the Adult Recognition Task Group, and represented the council as a National Delegate. Most recently, she served as First Vice Chair, working alongside former Board Chair Melissa Reed to support the organization’s continued growth.

As Board Chair, Burns will lead a 36-member Board of Directors responsible for governance, strategic direction, and oversight. Her priorities include strengthening community partnerships, expanding access to Girl Scouts programming across the council’s 41-county region, and advancing initiatives that empower girls to build confidence and leadership skills.

“Cheryl’s leadership reflects the very best of Girl Scouts; service, vision, and a deep belief in the potential of every girl,” said Lisa M.K. Jones, CEO of the organization. “I look forward to partnering with her as we continue to expand opportunities for girls to grow in confidence, courage, and character.”

Beyond her work with Girl Scouts, Burns has a strong background in education and advocacy. She currently serves as an Early Childhood Special Educator at Womack Army Medical Center, where she works with military-connected children with special needs. Her community involvement includes roles with Cape Fear Regional Theatre, the Junior League of Fayetteville, and as a Guardian ad Litem supporting children in Hoke and Robeson counties.

A former Girl Scout Troop Leader and Cub Scout leader, Burns has long been committed to supporting youth and families. Her leadership will guide one of the largest girl-led development programs in central and eastern North Carolina, which serves more than 20,000 members and volunteers.

Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines offers a wide range of programs focused on STEM, entrepreneurship, environmental leadership, and community service, aiming to help girls build skills and confidence while making a positive impact in their communities.
