Child drowns at North Topsail Beach

NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WWAY) – A child drowned at North Topsail beach over the weekend and his father is currently in this hospital.

According to a news release, it happened around 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.   Emergency medical personnel responded to Onslow County Beach Access #3 at the end of River Road in reference to a drowning.

North Topsail Beach Police Department personnel were patrolling this area near the inlet, realized help was needed and radioed dispatch for assistance. North Topsail Beach Fire and Rescue and Onslow County EMS responded.

A 5-year-old boy and his 28-year-old father from Faison are identified as the victims.

The child was transported to Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune and was pronounced dead later Saturday night.

The father was transported to Onslow Memorial Hospital and was later transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville and is still receiving medical attention.
