Child from Wilmington killed in camp accident

ALLEGHANY COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A 12-year-old girl from Wilmington was killed during a zip line accident.

The accident happened at Camp Cheerio in Glade Valley around 3 P.M.

The CEO of the YMCA of High Point, David Ozmore, says the tether that connects the harness around her waist to the pulley above broke while zip lining.

Ozmore says the camp EMT performed CPR and the onsite camp doctor responded, but they couldn’t save her.

While the camp has notified the family, it has not released the girl’s name yet. Ozmore says there are about 400 children at the camp and that there are grief counselors if children need it.

Camp Cheerio is a resident camp of the YMCA of High Point.
