Child hit by flying debris during Wilmington shooting

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Wilmington Police are looking for two men involved in a shooting that injured a 7-year-old girl.

Wilmington police say it happened around 3:30 pm.

Callers told 911 that several shots had been fired near the New Hanover Village Apartments off Buckingham Avenue.

Witnesses told police that they saw a black male and a Hispanic male using a gun during the dispute. Several apartments were hit by stray bullets, one of which caused a 7 year old girl to be slightly injured from flying glass. No one else got hurt.

Residents are glad the little girl is okay, but say the violence needs to stop.

“Stop the violence, stop the shooting. Let’s all come together on one accord. Kids can’t even come outside and play, people can’t even ride by in their cars afraid of getting shot at.”

Resident, Kimara Brown says she returned home from class to a crime scene and police officers surrounding the complex.

“I can’t say how I feel because I mean it happens everywhere,” Brown said. “But now it makes me not want to come outside at all even more.”
