Child suffers apparent shark bite at Surf City
SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — An 8-year-old boy suffered what appears to be a small shark bite at Surf City today.
Police say the boy received minor leg and foot injuries in the 700 South Shore Drive area. They say the wounds were superficial and not considered serious, but police and Pender East EMS responded and provided treatment.
Joseph James says he was swimming at the time when he saw his grandmother waving at him, trying to get him to get out of the water.
“She started waving her arms so she yelled up and told us there was a shark attack a couple of blocks down that way so I got that chill up my spine but nothing can really stop us from having fun,” said James.
Kim Turner says she visits Surf City often from Ohio. She says she was concerned about the child.
“Ourselves have spent a lot of time on Topsail so we’ve never heard of something like this happening on this island,” said Turner.
Tucker Darby and Delia Smith was also visiting.
“It’s not really much of a concern it’s more of a keep an eye out make sure you look around before you get in the water. If there’s no one else in the water don’t get out into the water,” said Smith.
According to a news release, the child’s parents were taking him to have the bite further assessed at the Scott’s Hill Emergency Room.
