Church gives thousands of pounds of food away

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington church is making a difference in the community by giving away thousands of pounds of food to people who need it.

Every third Friday of the month, Union Missionary Baptist Church holds a large food giveaway. Anyone in need can come by and grab groceries donated by the local food bank. People who come through the church can pick the food they need just like in a grocery store.

Church staff says they’ll give away about 30,000 pounds of food. They say they couldn’t make this happen without volunteers.

“Everybody you see here, it’s their ministry, and they all run it,” volunteers Annette Heyward said. “They work hard, they set up the food and they give the food to the people in the community with a smile.”

The church says it welcomes everyone and does not turn anyone away.
