Churches give out 2,500 book bags to kick off school year

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Area churches kicked off their third annual back to school bash at the Martin Luther King Center.

All day, volunteers handed out 2,500 book bags to folks throughout the community, while kids got to play, eat and enjoy the day with volunteers.

Pastor Robert Campbell said it is a small gesture that can make a big difference for some families.

“I don’t have to think about that for my kid, but there was a time when I was that kid waiting for a book bag,” Campbell said. “If it weren’t for people like the ones who came out here to do this, I wouldn’t have had a book bag.”

That is not all. Organizers also handed out vouchers for free haircuts and braids throughout this week. Next year, Campbell said they say they want to give out 2,750 book bags.
