City OKs upgrade of downtown video system

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — At Tuesday night’s meeting City Council appropriated about 33 thousand dollars for the Wilmington Police Department to enhance the downtown camera system.

Police can’t be everywhere and the camera system lets officers monitor the downtown area for trouble and resolve conflicts.

Chief Evangelous says the money will allow the police to get the most from the video system.

“We’re going to upgrade the back bone and put a mesh Wi Fi system in place that each camera will run independently, that is phase one,” Chief Evangelous said. “Phase two we will reposition cameras and add some cameras, and turn on the analytics that allow us to use the system to its fullest capacity.”

The Chief said the city will likely continue to add to the video system.
