City seeks input on new gym at Maides Park

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) —  The community was encouraged to attend a drop-in style meeting Thursday night to check out where the new gym will be in Maides Park.

Right now there are plans for a new gymnasium and multipurpose room at the park between the community center and playground.

The gym, along with another one at the MLK Center, are part of the parks bond approved by voters in 2016.

The city is applying for a $500,000 grant in addition to the money they were given for the project.

So far, city staff says the community has been supportive of the new gym.

“It’ll be a space for all kinds of activities,” project manager, Scott Spike said. “While it’ll have a basketball court inside of it, a basketball court is enough space to do all kinds of activities. Meetings and you can have a dance there. All kinds of things.”

A contract for the design of both gyms was approved by the Wilmington City Council in February.

Spike hopes the gym will be up and running by 2020.
