City working to beautify downtown during construction
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – The area near Market and Water Street in downtown Wilmington got a temporary face lift this week as a promotional banner, paid for by the Downtown Business Alliance and made in consultation with the city, was erected over the street.
In addition, more planters were placed to beautify the lower half of the block, which is closed to vehicles due to the infrastructure work at the foot of Market Street.
As for the project itself, crews have finished the replacement of the water and sewer lines and are continuing construction of the new bulkhead. In addition, the city says some of the streetscape work should begin in the next several weeks. The existing bulkhead is in such poor condition that the work for most of the sewer and all of the bulkhead construction is only accessible at low tide, slowing progress considerably.
This project is slated to wrap up in early January, at which point Market Street and Water Street will re-open.
In the meantime, the intersection of Water and Princess Streets will be paved and fully open in time for Riverfest, October 8-9.
