City Council votes to rezone area for new school

At Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, students, parents, and faculty of the Cape Fear Center for Inquiry were delighted by council’s unanimous vote to rezone an area for a new school.

Council approved the ordinance to allow a much larger school to be built near the intersection of Shipyard and Wellington. The school is currently located on Randall Parkway, in a facility with cramped classrooms and no place for assemblies.

Students and staff are excited by the changes. Fourth grader Pheobe Davidson said, “I’m excited to have more space in the classrooms, and to be able to have more space in the hallways.”

“It gets crowded, the noise level gets really high, and there’s not always enough space to do the things that I want the children to do,” said teacher/parent Rene Lemons-Matney. “One of my students said he wanted more blocks. Well, I’d love to have more blocks in the new building. I don’t have space for any more blocks in the current building.”

The new school will cost about five million dollars. The Cape Fear Center for Inquiry’s board saved the money. Administrators hope to have it completed by the 2011 academic year.
