City still working out details for downtown taxi stand
The city is still trying to iron out kinks for a taxi stand in Downtown Wilmington to make it easier and safer for people trying to find cabs. After complaints about the first trial run, taxi companies called this past weekend a success.
This go around, the taxi stand was moved to a more central location at Front and Market Streets. While taxi companies were pleased, Downtown business owners complained about having parts of Front Street closed off.
Wilmington police say the street would not be closed off if the taxi stand becomes permanent.
"The central location taxi stand, like our last one last weekend, doesn’t require a lot of man power to run, and it gives the freedom of choice back to the customer," said Wilmington Police Lt. Ed Pigford.
The city hopes to have a regular taxi stand in place by spring.
