City of Wilmington changing trash pickup days beginning today

Beginning April 19, the city is changing the day trash, recycling and yard waste is picked up for many city trash customers in order to be more efficient and save money.

The change is needed because over the last four years, the city has begun collecting trash and recycling for customers in the city that used to be picked up by private companies. Now, the city has 30,000 customers and picks up trash for all homeowners in the city, except for a few homes on private streets. The city picks up trash, yard waste and recycling once a week for all customers.

Even while adding more customers, pickup days were not changed because the city did not want customers to be confused or inconvenienced. However, now that the city is collecting trash across the city, routes need to be consolidated to be more efficient. The change is expected to save $260,000 each year.

Pickup days for more than 60 percent of the city’s customers will change. Customers will receive notice of the change in the mail and information is also available on the city’s website at wilmingtonnc.gov/routes or by calling the New Routes Hotline at 341-0226.
