Close battle between police and firefighters
There was quite a battle at Buck Hardy field Monday night. It was a clash of the titans as Wilmington Police took on Wilmington Firefighters.
A good crowd turned out for the game. Allegiances were split, although the firemen did some good pre-game marketing with fire hats.
On the field it was a nail biter. We found the mayor standing on the firefighters’ side when we arrived, but he said he was a man on the move as we tried to pin him down. “I am going to go back and forth. I love them both. I’ll say this – youth to the police, experience to the fire department. They are both great teams,” Mayor Saffo said.
The firefighters blew it open with a five-run fifth inning, but the cops clawed back to within one in the seventh.
The final: 9-8 Wilmington Firefighters.
Proceeds from the game go to the police memorial fund and a fund for the family of Ed Kramer, the National Guard soldier and former Wilmington firefighter killed last month in Iraq.
