Club manager looks at safety protocols following Orlando shooting

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A popular Wilmington nightclub is taking a closer look at its security protocol following the nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida over the weekend.

Justin Thuesen, general manager of the Ibiza nightclub, said they are taking some precautions.

“We’re actually working with the Wilmington Police Department in improving the amount of police that are out in front of the club,” said Thuesen. “Just to have more of a visual of the cops being there makes people feel a little bit safer.”

Thuesen said anywhere from 100 to 300 people will go through Ibiza in one night. He said they are also looking at what they can do as an business.

“Simple steps, increasing the amount of security we have on staff, be a little bit more observant and having more of an open communication between staff members, patrons and our security personnel,” said Thuesen.

Thuesen said in his five years at Ibiza they haven’t had any serious incidents but they want to be prepared.

Ibiza will be hosting a charity event this Friday. Club staff is will drop the door charge and taking donations for the Orlando victims. The club is also matching the donations collected up to $5,000.

“We need to continue on with celebrating life and celebrating love,” said Thuesen.
