Coast Guard needs help identifying false call suspects
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Coast Guard needs your help identifying two men overheard on their marine radios talking about making false distress calls. Click on the video link above to listen to the call. If you can identify a voice in the clip, call the Coast Guard at (252) 247-4571.
Making a false distress call is a felony punishable up to ten years in prison, a $5,000 civil fine, a $250,000 criminal fine and reimbursement to the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard says says false calls take them away from responding to real calls, puts responders in danger and waste thousands of dollars of taxpayer money each year.
