Coastal Carolina Blues Society to host music workshop at Surf City Middle School

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — Surf City Middle School students will receive free harmonicas and hands-on music instruction during a blues workshop scheduled for Friday, Oct. 23.
The Coastal Carolina Blues Society will host the one-hour “Blues in the Schools” program from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the school. Each participating student will receive a donated Bushman harmonica to keep, according to the organization.
The workshop will be led by Chicago blues musician “Southside Stevie” Berek, a 30-year veteran of the blues scene who has performed with musicians including Buddy Guy and Los Lobos. Surf City Middle School music instructor Trevor Judy will also participate.
The program will introduce students to blues music through live demonstrations, harmonica instruction and lessons on the genre’s cultural history.
The Coastal Carolina Blues Society says the initiative is intended to provide students with access to musical instruments and hands-on instruction. The organization is a nonprofit focused on promoting blues music in Eastern North Carolina through performances, community outreach and youth education.
Friday’s workshop will lead into the society’s annual “Sounds of Freedom” music festival on Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Topsail Island Moose Lodge in Hampstead.
Sponsored by Bojangles, the festival will feature the Chris O’Leary Band, Tullie Brae Band, Anthony Rosano and the Conqueroos, and the Carl Newton Review.
Additional festival schedule and ticket information is available through the Coastal Carolina Blues Society.
