Columbus Co. Commission calls emergency meeting on water tower painting

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — The Columbus County Commission has called an emergency meeting for tomorrow night.

According to the notice signed by Commission Chair Trent Burroughs, the meeting “is being held for the purpose to discuss unexpected circumstances that require immediate consideration by the Board.”

Those unexpected circumstances concern a new water tower in the Hallsboro community. Commissioner Burroughs says painters are almost finished with the lettering on the tower, but now there is a call to put Hallsboro’s name on the tower as well. If the painters finish the job without adding Hallsboro’s name, it will cost an additional $3,500 set up fee, plus $150 per letter to return at a later date and add the name. That comes to nearly $5,000.

If the painters get approval to add Hallsboro’s name to the water tower before they finish the job, it will only be an additional $750.

That’s why commissioners are meeting tomorrow night to give that consideration. Commissioner Burroughs says there is already enough money in the project to pay the additional $750 cost.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Courthouse Annex at 112 W. Smith St. in Whiteville.
