Columbus County Animal Shelter celebrating grant
COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Columbus County Animal Shelter is celebrating a $1,000 grant for their cat spay and neuter program.
The shelter received the grant from Maddie’s Fund for meeting the requirements of the Million Cat Challenge in May. The hope is to spay or neuter all every cat that comes in to deal with overpopulation in the county.
Director Joey Prince says, “Our team has really worked hard in the past year to improve the conditions for our shelter cats. We have added an new cat room for our adoptable cats and have had food and medicines donated by the community to make their lives better, so its nice to be recognized for all of our hard work.”
The improvements have included cages that encourage climbing and cat hammocks. The shelter is now working on an enclosed outside play area to give the cats more time outside of their cages. They are seeking additional grant funding for the project.
Along with the Columbus Humane Society, the shelter runs a trap, spay-neuter, release program for feral cats. Feral cats are trapped humanely, receive shots, are spayed or neutered, and then released to area farms who have requested cats to control pests. The Humane Society checks on the cats to be sure they are given good care.
If you would like to adopt a cat from the shelter, they are available Monday – Friday from 8:30 A.M. to 4 P.M.
