Columbus County deputies save elderly woman from burning home
COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Two Columbus County deputies are being called heroes after saving a woman trapped in a burning home.
Columbus County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were notified of a house fire on Reaves Ferry Road in Nakina shortly after 12:30 a.m. Thursday.
Deputies say 75-year-old Alma Faulk Long was trapped inside the house. CCSO says Long tried to escape through a window, but was unsuccessful.
The sheriff’s office says First Sgt. J. McPherson and Sgt. P. Herring heard the call and immediately responded to the fire.
First Sgt. J. McPherson attempted to enter the home through an adjacent window but was unable to because the home was engulfed with flames. First Sgt. J. McPherson and Sgt. P. Herring were finally able to lift Long out of a window to safety.
She was transported to the hospital for medical treatment.
“We want to recognize First Sgt. J. McPherson and Sgt. P. Herring for their bravery and quick thinking. Long is able to hug her family tonight because of these heroes,” CCSO posted on Facebook.
