Columbus County deputy resigns following arrest for assault

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Columbus County man has resigned from his job as a deputy following an incident that occurred when he was off-duty.
According to a report from the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, 33-year-old Kenneth Aaron Smith was involved in an incident with another individual on Friday, May 24th that resulted in his arrest.
At this point, few details have been released about what happened during that incident, but Smith was charged with Assault With a Deadly Weapon and Assault Inflicting Serious Injury.
He was released on Friday after posting a $100,000 bond, and according to Sheriff Rogers, Smith resigned the same day.
The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident.
