Wilmington researchers try to help solve adolescent depression

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Overcoming depression can be an uphill battle, especially because the symptoms are difficult to recognize. This is especially true for teenagers.

New Hanover Medical Research Associates is doing a clinical trial on childhood and adolescent depression. Dr. Scott Crowder says there’s not a lot of research aimed at the effects of medications on boys and girls under the age of 18.

The research is geared toward finding more tools, including another medication, to help fight what can be a debilitating problem. Many times the symptoms can be elusive.

“At my worst it was more of not talking to people, staying in my room,” said Olivia Cleary, who was treated for depression two years ago. “I didn’t really notice how bad it was, because when you’re like that you don’t really think about the other side, and it took my dad, you know, someone else realizing it.”
