Young entrepreneurs profit off produce

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Some recent college grads are literally reaping the fruits of their labor. Chris Hutchens, Sven Wallin and Andrew Cameron put their college degrees on the back-burners and are now rookie entrepreneurs.

Port City Produce opened four months ago, and business has been booming since. Twice a week, they make the trip to Columbia, SC, where they pick up fresh produce to sell here in Wilmington. They say a permanent produce stand on Market Street just north of Eastwood Road is exactly what the Port City needed.

“I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur and own my own business, and we saw an opening for this so we jumped on this,” Hutchens said. “We really didn’t see a market for anything like fresh produce markets in this area, so we decided to start one up.”

Coming up on WWAY NewsChannel 3 at 6 p.m., we’ll hear more about their business, including how they got started and where they hope to expand.
