Commission to reconsider Kure Beach sandbags

A New Hanover County judge sandbagged the state’s Coastal Resources Commission Tuesday.

In January 2008 the commission recommended that the Riggings Condominiums in Kure Beach be denied a permit extension on the condo’s sandbags.

Tuesday, New Hanover County judge, Jay Hockenbury, reversed the commission’s decision and sent it back to the commission to reconsider.

The sandbags, which protect the building from beach erosion, have been a point of environmental contention since 2005.
